CULTURAL PROGRAMMES AND THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT
Our society cultural activity is produced according to hardly classifiable complex patterns.
This complexity, to which the institutional management has shown neutral, emerges in the design and projection debate.
Therefore corresponds to the architectural project, propose, beyond the unquestionable demands of functional and technological efficiency, a response to the communication requirements (accessibility, use, interaction, etc) precise for an identity between culture and society today. Corresponds to the architectural project to choose, in this debate, between the anthropological and sociological constraints of the everyday, or the emblematic features of the Institutional. These references are interpreted in the works being presented as a negotiation between the object and the symbolic, therefore, between the accessible, the use, and the discipline and perceptions of the architectural space.
The Cultural Centre in Fuenlabrada, designed in collaboration with Eduardo Mangada, addresses both references from two different scales: the everyday advises organizing programs, the medium scale space and project details, while the institutional (and emblematic or symbolic) justifies the proposal on urban large-scale.
In the Library of Granada, this dialectic occurs much more attenuated by the main role of space and the exhaustive development of its categories at all scales, system in which the citizen usefulness is subordinated to the project’s perceptual and figurative values.
A similar description corresponds to the reading of the Library of Fuencarral highlighting perhaps some deliberate subversion of scales. This case tried to evade the institutional features in the resolution of the project on the urban scale, suppressing from the exterior language the symbolic and perceptive to accentuate in this urban scale the constructive and the object and transfer to the medium scale and interior details the disciplinary, emblematic etc. values of the Institutional.
The small Library of Maudes is treated as a great piece of furniture housed in the former Hospital plant, powerful institutional object, furniture developed with an optimistic belief that its use is sufficient guarantee of the final cultural efficiency.
Finally, is in the State Library in Santiago de Compostela where the commitment of the architectural project with the ability of social use and, therefore, the "object" nature of the project on top of the emblematic institutional, is intended to tighten. The last one is reached when it has transcended to the collective memory and because of its high gradient of daily identity and citizenship it becomes an urban icon. The entire project is oriented in all its scales for this purpose.
